Aspiring, budding or experienced photographer in Pictou County? We have the perfect group for you.
Meet SNAPS – the Scotsburn Northumberland Amateur Photography Society, a welcoming group of photographers in our area, who share and celebrate their work, and learn and grow with one another through their passion of photography.
SNAPS was started in 2012 by David Hachey and Christine Whelan who were newcomers to the community of Scotsburn. Photographers themselves, they felt that starting the group would help them meet people in the community. The group is completely volunteer-run, and is currently led by club president, Ray Strickland.
The group meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm at Northumberland High School from September to June. At each meeting the group either welcomes a guest speaker or has a member do a presentation on technical topics about photography. Twice a year they have a member’s night where people bring their photos to share with others. Membership is $10 per year and $2 per meeting, and there is a cover charge of $5 only when the group brings in outside speakers to help cover costs.
The group also works to organize a monthly outing, typically on Sunday afternoons where members can snap photos, and get feedback and guidance to help improve their photography skills. The group enjoys traveling to locations in Pictou County, and nearby places like Victoria Park in Truro. This past December they chartered a bus, ad took a trip to the Christmas at Sherbrooke Village celebration. The group has over 700 members and admirers on Facebook, where photographers share their photos to solicit feedback or simply to share their stunning captures.
SNAPS also introduced a mentoring program to have experienced members team up with members struggling with their equipment.
When Healthy Pictou County was looking for images that capture the people, places and things that make Pictou County special, members of SNAPS rose to the occasion. Many of the photographs you see in our materials were generously shared by our local photographers.
The group’s Facebook page can be found HERE, and members would be more than thrilled to welcome you to their group, no matter what level your photography skills are.
Spotted in SNAPS: Dr. Gerry Farrell, a retired family and palliative physician, and Dr. Aaron Smith, family physician at the Westville Medical Clinic are members!
